Food Truck Rally On Its Way to Ferndale in March

Ferndale City Council approved a special event permit on Monday night for Metro Detroit Street Eats to be held on March 21 at the Rust Belt Market.

Ferndale City Council approved a special event permit at its for Metro Detroit Street Eats, a mobile food vendor event to take place 3-10 p.m. March 21 at the .

Council also approved the closure of the alley behind Rust Belt, where food trucks will be parked.

The event will be similar to the food truck rally at the Farmer's Market in Royal Oak earlier this month, which at only halfway through the event saw 1,200 customers served by the six food trucks and a cart from in Ferndale.

The event was sponsored by the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association.

Scott Maloney, owner of Treat Dreams, is a member of the association and has been heading up efforts to bring the mobile food event to Ferndale. He said the event was a huge success in Royal Oak.

"The crowd was just awesome and I don't expect it to be any different in Ferndale," he said.

Maloney said people who had never been to Royal Oak showed up for the food truck rally there, and he thinks the event will be a big draw for people in and outside of the city. "I think we are going to see the same thing here in Ferndale," he said.

He is planning for Street Eats to be a recurring event, eventually shifting to the third Thursday of each month.

Rust Belt co-owner Chris Best said he was excited about the event taking place at his business.

"I love it," Best said of the event idea.

Also at the meeting Monday night, council members heard from Ferndale City Clerk J. Cherilynn Tallman about new guidelines the city may consider in the future for both sidewalk vendors and food trucks - looking at details like locations, a limit on the number of vendors, trash removal and other issues.

Tallman said more information on proposed guidelines will be brought to council members at their March 12.
