School Improvement Mondays - a new Ferndale Public Schools K-12 school improvement initiative - starts today at all of the district schools.
As part of the program, all students across the district will be dismissed 55 minutes early on Mondays.
All teachers, principals and instructional leaders will participate in the initiative, which provides teachers with "structured time to collaborate in rigorous and focused Data Teams meetings to examine student work, review data, determine instructional strategies, and monitor implementation and student progress," according to the latest Ferndale Schools e-newsletter.
The district is offering a variety of options for parents whose children need supervision during the 55-minute early release. Find more information in the Sept. 7 district newsletter.

Last I checked, students need MORE time being educated, not less of it.

I, for one, think this is a great. This will allow teachers to be more efficient with their instruction thus boosting student scores. The ability to review data and plan accordingly is of the utmost importance.

I agree that reviewing data is important, but I don't feel like they should be cutting an hour out of the schoolday to do so. Why can't these meetings be held after school?

From my understanding, the number of instructional hours per year is unchanged or barely changed from previous years. They cut out full days off for students on records days or parent/teacher conference days, etc., to make up a lot of the difference. The district is still exceeding the state requirements for hours of instruction.
