New Dog Day Care Opening Soon in Ferndale
Canine to Five will open at 2141 Hilton Road on Dec. 15.
A new dog day care facility will open next month in Ferndale.
Canine to Five, which opened its first location in Midtown Detroit in 2007, is opening a second location in Ferndale. The new business will be located at 2141 Hilton Road, offering dog day care services and eventually grooming and boarding services.
“Canine to Five has grown exponentially since we opened in Midtown seven years ago,” said Liz Blondy, founder and owner of Canine to Five. “Our current facility is consistently at capacity, so we knew it was time to expand to another location and Ferndale is at the crossroads of where many of our current customers live. We are looking forward to servicing them closer to their homes, and meeting our new neighbors and canine friends in Oakland County.”
The new business is expected to open Dec. 15.
Blondy said dog day care offers pets the opportunity for socialization and to get their energy out during the day - having fun with other dogs - so they aren't so hyper when their owners get home from work.
"They want to play for an hour and I want to curl up by the fire," she laughed. "It just makes being a dog owner a little bit easier."
Doggy day care can be especially helpful to anyone with a new puppy at home, she said, pointing out the benefits of help with housebreaking and behavior training. She said small dogs and puppies will have separate space at the facility from larger dogs.
Ferndale City Council approved an ordinance amendment in August that allows doggy day cares as a primary use for businesses in Ferndale.
Canine to Five will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The facility has 4,000 square feet of indoor climate-controlled play space and more than 1,000 square feet of outdoor play space.
Canine to Five’s Detroit facility is located at the corner of Mack and Cass Avenue and is Detroit’s only dog day care facility. The Midtown location also offers overnight cageless boarding and grooming.
“We are going to open Canine to Five Ferndale with our core service, day care, first, but plan to expand our operations to include boarding and grooming within the next six months," Blondy said.
As for being a new business owner in Ferndale, Blondy says she has found everyone to be very welcoming, including neighboring business owners, the Ferndale DDA and Chamber of Commerce. "Everybody is so nice," she said.
