Ferndale Parking Rate Changes on Council Agenda and More This Week
Get ready for the week ahead in Ferndale with these five things to know.
1. City Council meets Monday
Ferndale City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Ferndale City Hall. Included on council's agenda are possible parking rate changes.
The city is currently working with the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority to modernize its parking system, which includes the new multi-space parking meter system which allows for flexibility in rates and payments.
At Monday's meetings, council will consider new rates based on parking priority areas. The city's current parking rate is 50 cents per hour. The new recommended rate is $1 per hour for on-street parking, 75 cents an hour in most lots, 50 cents an hour in Lot#1, and $1 per hour in all lots after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
You can view the full agenda here.
2. Parents Night Out
Ferndale Recreation is offering a Parents Night Out program from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the Kulick Community Center. Parents can enjoy a night out while their kids participate in games, arts and crafts and more. Program open to ages 4-12. Fee is $15 and advance registration is required; registration closes on Wednesday. For more information, visit www.ferndalerecreation.org or call 248-544-6767.

Book parties at the Emory continue Thursday with a discussion of World War Z by Max Brooks. The event, held in partnership with the Ferndale Public Library, starts at 7:30 p.m. and includes appetizers and drink specials. Find more information here.

Parking should not be raised to 1.00 per hour. We have a parking problem on streets south of 9 Mile. The stickers are working some but are not 60%. It seems everyone from Detroit parks on the streets and walks to a salon or takes their kids to Martial Arts Center. Leave the parking at 50 per hour, we are not Royal Oak. The Ferndale DDA s@*k!.

How do these fees compare to surrounding communities like Royal Oak for instance?

My understanding is that in Royal Oak, downtown wireless meters are $1 per hour (less in other areas and lots). On-street rates in Birmingham vary from 50 cents to $1 per hour, with most in the downtown area at $1/hour.

I agree 100% with Easydude. Also, I could care less about spending money on new parking meters (they're going to do whatever they want anyway) just MAKE SURE they take quarters. Don't ask me to get out my smart phone, walk to a kiosk or use my credit card just because I need to run into Radio Shack for 15 minutes. It's just way FASTER and way EASIER to drop the coin into the slot than to try and muddle through all those other methods.
