Ferndale Cat Owner Says Craigslist Poster Won't Return Pet

A resident says her Maine Coon cat "Foxy," missing since early November, is posted for adoption on Craigslist.

A Ferndale resident is left baffled and distressed as she tries to bring her lost cat "Foxy" home but isn't getting a response from someone on Craigslist who appears to have found her.

Marilu Andracke contacted Patch in early November when her small Maine Coon cat first went missing - we posted this lost pet notice.

Nothing turned up until a few days ago, when people started emailing her about a post on Craigslist seeking an adoptive family for a cat found in Ferndale who "exactly matched" her cat, she said.

She quickly emailed the person who posted the ad and explained the situation, but she says she never heard back. The next day, the same ad was posted again but it called the cat a different name.

"I emailed again, and again, and again to no avail," Andracke said. "Instead, my inbox became flooded with messages from other people, who happened to recognize her in this person's adoption ad by the pictures I'd posted previously on [Craigslist]."

She said she has "no doubt" that it's Foxy in the photos on the Craigslist ad. She also posted her own ad in response, asking people to not adopt the cat and urging the author of the post to contact her.

Now five days later, Andracke has taken the situation to Ferndale Police. She said officers told her there isn't much they can do, but one detective did send the poster an email to see if it would help.

"I don't know what to do," she said. "I just want to bring her home. Literally there is just nothing I can do."

Andracke says she can't begin to guess the poster's reason for not responding. The adoption ad doesn't state whether an adoption fee is being sought.

"I'm baffled," she said. "At this point it just feels like someone has my cat and they won't give it back to me."

Patch sent an email asking about the situation to the Craigslist email account for the ad but did not immediately receive a response back.

Though her nights are sleepless, Andracke takes some comfort in knowing "Foxy" is alive and seems to have access to food, water and shelter.

"If she's OK and there's nothing I can do then at least I know she's safe and alive," she said.

Perhaps the cat's owner should just pay the adoption fee so that her beloved cat does not end up being adopted to another family, and then it would be too late for her to every get the cat back.

I sent an email. The posting asks to call if you are interested, but no phone number posted. Maybe the person is just not looking at their email. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt- would hate to see a Ferndale resident screw over another right in the same neighborhood!

This is just terrible. I truly hope this cat owner gets reunited with the feline soon. Perhaps an email stating a reward would be given would entice them? As tragic as that would be, perhaps they require money. I hope everything turns out well!!

The owner of the cat has probably been going through the neighborhood with a picture of the cat asking if it has been seen. I looked at the craigslist ad of the person who found the cat. They took a picture of the cat in a bathroom with a distinctive ceramic tile pattern, green wall and cheetah print shower curtain. maybe the cat's owner instead should print that picture and ask neighbors if they recognize that bathroom.

I would hope the poster would respond to a request from the police. If not, does anyone know an attorney who could send a letter on his/her letterhead pro bono? Usually, some form of official contact works wonders.

Money has been offered and multiple people (from Michigan and elsewhere) have responded to the CL poster to adopt Foxy. Bizarrely, no one is getting any kind of reply. This lack of any response is why I contacted the Patch and the Police. I want to make sure this person knows how much she means to me and my boyfriend, and if they aren't checking their email or are, in fact, refusing to respond, this is the only other option I feel left with. Of course, we would be extremely pleased for this to be nothing but an unfortunate misunderstanding, in which case, apologies would be due; I just don't feel it is.

Not to be mean, but this reminds me of an old Bugs Bunny or that era cartoon where someone is shipping something to China or some other far place to get rid of it. Do you know of any neighbors which may have been annoyed by your cat? I used to have an outdoor Maine Coon which owned the neighborhood. One morning we got a knock on the door from a neighbor that said he was dead on his porch. I did not have him checked for what he died of, but there was no evidence of external trauma. Just saying, the person who has him may not be very far from you.

marilu,
there has got to be a way to find out who and where this person is. maybe the police can obtain the info from craig's list somehow.
my heart goes out to you.
on another note, I have seen a small Maincoon cat on the first block of pearson, about 1/2 way down west of woodward. the last few days in a row when i go home for lunch i see the cat in the street sitting by the cars. now i have no reason to beleave that this is your cat except that there are just not that many small (possibly female)mainecoon's out there, maybe the people have either let it go OR let it out a little? if it even is the same cat. worth a few drive bys...
best of luck.

I just got Foxy back! Whoever had her finally broke and brought her to the detective I'd been speaking to. I'm so relieved. Thank you all for your help/support/advice! Cheers!

Just like the cartoons! Somehow they end up coming back after going all around the world. What tales that cat could tell if she could talk!

Excellent news. I'm sure you can't help but to hug her so much now that she's home.
