It is estimated that the average weight gain for Americans during the holiday season is between seven and 10 pounds. And those who overindulge in holiday goodies are also at risk of heartburn or acid reflux.

Beaumont Health System will host a free community health event, “Holidays Without Heartburn and How Not to Gain 10 Pounds” with experts providing health, wellness and nutritional advice, cooking demonstrations and information about eliminating heartburn and avoiding weight gain during the holidays.

The community event is being held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 6 to 9 p.m. at Sola Life & Fitness, Beaumont’s medically based fitness center, located at the Beaumont Health & Wellness Center, 1555 E. South Blvd. in Rochester Hills. There is no charge to attend. For more information, call Sola Life & Fitness at 248-267-5600

“As the holiday season approaches, we want to prepare people with the appropriate advice so they may enjoy themselves without experiencing unnecessary health issues,” says Deb LaRue, director, Sola. “Participants will meet Beaumont physicians and wellness experts and attend cooking demonstrations where dietitians will provide tips on how to enjoy holiday festivities without overeating high-fat, high-caloric foods that can cause heartburn or acid reflux.”

Community members can take part in free prize drawings, wine tastings, and specialty food samplings, including gluten-free items, shopping, interactive activities and more.

Other businesses and community organizations participating at the event include: Wheatgrass and Sprouts; Joe Bologna; Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and Lolly Ella Jewelry.

Beaumont has more than 3,700 private-practice physicians in 91 medical and surgical specialties. In addition to its three hospitals located in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe, Beaumont has numerous community-based medical centers, located in Lake Orion, Macomb Township, Rochester Hills, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Troy, Warren and West Bloomfield. The Beaumont Health & Wellness Center in Rochester Hills includes Sola Life & Fitness, a medically based fitness center, rehabilitation, integrative medicine, pain services and physician offices.
