Ann Romney, Breast Cancer Survivor, Spreads Word on Awareness
The Bloomfield Hills native not only has rallied for her husband Mitt Romney's presidential bid, but Ann Romney also has thrown her support behind breast cancer awareness.
While Ann Romney has taken to the presidential campaign trail to support her husband Mitt Romney, she also has rallied her efforts for another cause: breast cancer awareness.
Ann Romney, a native of Bloomfield Hills and a student at Cranbrook, is a breast cancer survivor.
In 2008, Ann Romney had surgery to remove a precancerous lump from her breast, according to the Boston Globe. Mitt Romney told CNN that Barack Obama, at the time the president-elect, called to offer his prayers to the Romney family.
So while Ann Romney has campaigned for her husband this month, including a stop in Bloomfield Township on Oct. 12, she also has focused her attention on breast cancer awareness.
Both Ann Romney and Michelle Obama wore pink dresses at the second presidential debate on Oct. 16, perhaps in a nod to Breast Cancer Awareness month.
On Saturday, Ann Romney took part in a breast cancer 5K walk/run in Orlando, FL, according to WPEC-TV. Earlier this month, she visited a cancer center in Florida.
"It was inspirational," Ann Romney told MySuncoast.com about her trip to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
TELL US IN THE COMMENTS: Who are the breast cancer survivors who inspire you?

While I think it is commendable that Ann Romney is promoting Breast Cancer Awareness because early detection saves lives,. As one who has undergone 2 lumpectomies and then a bilateral mastectomy, I take umbrage with her being portrayed as a Breast Cancer Survivor for having a pre-cancerous lump removed. I am a 10 year Breast Cancer Survivor!
If her husband is elected and "Obamacare" is repealed than I would be denied medical insurance for a pre-existing condition! I think the Romney campaign is trying to garner support by using Ann for sympathy.

Amy,
Thanks for your umbrage. I used that as a reason to research Ann Romney's cancer. From what I found, she was diagnosed with a ductal carcinoma in situ, which is defined as a non invasive type of breast cancer. In addition to the lumbectomy, she also had radiation treatments. She obviously is under care to watch for recurrence or development of other cancer, and her tests continue to show that she is cancer free, although she does have increased risk of recurrence. If her intent was to heighten awareness about breast cancer in all its forms, not only has she done that but your offense to her being called a breast cancer survivor has certainly done that for me as well. As a family member of people who survived breast cancer, but died from lung, bone and other cancer, congratulations on being a 10 year survivor.

You are wrong. Go on line and read the bill. The" pre-existing' condition is shadowy to say the least and if you are over 50 Obamacare may limit the amount of treatment you receive. You may be voting for the wrong person for the wrong reason. Please stop getting your info from pun-dents on Talk shows and go and read the bill for yourself before you vote. To take umbrage with a person who has had so many health issues and has been a role model is just very small of you. Go and read the bill before you offer the rest of us advice

In Michigan, today, you can always buy coverage through Blue Cross with a pre-existing condition. Of course, they can charge you whatever they want, and for most, it's unaffordable. But, the Michigan House just passed a bill to change the non-profit status of Blue Cross, and they'll no longer be forced to accept everyone. When that happens - Obamacare is your only recourse. If it's repealed, you will not be able to find coverage in Michigan. If it stays, not only will you be able to buy coverage, but the insurance companies will be prevented from charging you more because of your health status, nor will they be able to drop you because you're costing them too much - all of which happens today.
Joyce Black has no idea what she's talking about. The "over 50 limiting treatment" comment is a veiled reference to the GOP "death panels", which has been proven over and over as the lie of the year.
If you are sick, are worried about getting sick, or care for someone that's sick - Obamacare is the best thing to ever happen to you. Whether you know it or not.

I agree with Amy.
I honestly would like to see her put more of a public focus on MS. She is a shining example of how treatments that have become available in the last 30 years have resulted in huge improvements in the day to day lives of those afflicted (treatments that all carry other health dangers). MS doesn't get anywhere near the studies, donationations or PR of other medical conditions. She is in a very unique position of being able to put a public face on MS.

I really hate to see when people imply that someone's situation doesn't matter as much or what they went through somehow doesn't count as much. You can't fault Ann Romney because she had early diagnosis and a successful surgery. I'm sure she was just as devastated and just as scared as any other women who hears that news. She WAS diagnosed, she HAD surgery, she SURVIVED. She is still someone's wife, mother, & daughter. It mattered to her family just as much. Belittling her "survival" defeats the overall good of what having a high profile woman out supporting the cause does. As women, we should be supporting each other and lifting each other up. Ann Romney is going to make a fine first lady.

The you Rachel for eloquently saying what I was about to say. I applaud Ann for all she is doing. I believe she will make a fine first lady. And you are absolutely right, as woman we should be supportive to each other with out giving that support a quality level. I can't believe how vicious some people can be towards Ann Romney. Like when Ann R. spoke about working women, she was attacked by other women no less, because she's never worked a 'real job' in her life.

Some day's I wish I had a job to go to. : ) It's hard to be home every day, but so worth it.
I respect all the working moms, too!!! I'm just saying it's also work to stay home.
Yes, we all need to stick together and encourage each other on the journey.

Honey, ive read lots of the bill, and lobbied the hill with patient advocacy groups and professionals. I know EXACTLY whats in the law for those with life threatening medical conditions. If obamacare is repealed, and you have a have a serious medical condition, and wind up in the private health insurance market, say through job loss or your employer deciding not to offer benefits, you will not be able to even purchase health insurance, at any cost, in this state when this blue cross thing goes through.

You've read the law, so i'm sure this "lie" will be familiar to you. I know more about the law than you EVER will. Which part of this would you say is "shadowy", there Annie?

And here's a link about the blue cross Overhaul, which will end their requirement to cover everyone. If obamacare gets repealed, and this goes away - those with prexisting conditions will be totally shut out of the private, individual insurance market.
Anything else you "think" you know about obamacare I can correct you on, or would you like to just call me a liar again"?

The article you refer to has quite a bit of mis-leading info. First it is written by an Obamacare supporter from the AP...... and you say your such a well informed activist but you base your whole view a article in the newspaper.LOL Like I said enough is enough you believe what you want just stop using your scare tactics on others.

Uh huh. I forgot about the vast right wing media conspiracy. You've made me laugh out loud. Fact is, it has zero misleading information.
Fact: Blue Cross is currently the provider of last resort for those with pre-existing conditions, due to their tax exempt status. Fact. Blue Cross will no longer be required to offer coverage to those with pre-existing conditions if this bill, which has already passed the Senate, passes the Michigan House and is signed by the governor. Fact. If mandates in Obamacare go away, those with pre-existing conditions will not be able to buy coverage in this state - at any cost.
Have you tried to purchase medical coverage with pre-existing conditions? I have. My family is uninsurable in the individual market. If I were to lose my job - I'd have no coverage, and be quickly forced into bankruptcy. Millions are in the same position.
Let me guess. You're on Medicare, so you have NO IDEA what the real world insurance market is all about.

Joyce do you have anything of substance to add here? You keep saying read the bill and when someone says they have you accuse them of lying. "Read the bill" is the standard tea party response on this as if has some deep dark secret buried on pg 943... I suspect you haven't read the bill and are simply following the fox news talking points...

Medicare is (mostly) a successful program run by the people (the government) for the people. Its something we ALL pay into and not an entitlement. The insurance plans that our congress has, their retirement plans, that is an entitlement. Btw, the plans they use are single payer government based and somehow they don't feel we are good enough to have access to the gilded benefits they use.

It's partially an entitlement.
Not everyone pays into Medicare. Any citizen qualifies at age 65, even if they've never paid a dime in Medicare tax. You pay a premium if you've never worked.
No one has paid into Medicare what their benefits actually cost. Medicare tax rates haven't kept pace with the increasing cost of health care, and there was zero increase when the massive new prescription drug benefit came into being.

Fox news talking points? Did you read any of heartlands many talking points? Oh boy. Over 2000 pages and you want me to do her homework. All I intended to do was to let the readers know that she was using scare tactics. Michigan and Detroit are in trouble because you keep electing the same people over and over and over again because you scare people with nonsense. Have a nice life. Enough!

Bye Bye, Joyce. Typical response.
These facts are scary, Joyce. I provide facts and sources. You make sweeping statements, which are patently false - with no backup, and when challenged, your response is to call the other person a liar and run off. You're entitled to your own opinion, Joyce. Not your own facts.
