Ferndale Police Participate in Prescription Drug Disposal Day

The Ferndale Police Department will participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Residents will be able to dispose of any expired or unwanted prescription medications for proper destruction at the department — with no questions asked.

The service, coordinated in the conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency and other law enforcement agencies, is free and anonymous.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and health issue. More than 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.
